What Is the Waterproof Performance of LED Explosion-Proof Lights

When it comes to LED explosion-proof lights, everyone knows they are explosion-proof, but many consumers often ask when purchasing: “Is this LED explosion-proof light waterproof? Can it be used outdoors?” Today, I will clarify whether LED explosion-proof lights can indeed be waterproof.

Concept:

Some substandard manufacturers sell waterproof LED lights as explosion-proof to make more profit. Waterproof LEDs are ordinary lighting fixtures and incomparable to LED explosion-proof lights. If submerged in water, LED explosion-proof lights can cause internal circuitry to short-circuit, leading to fires; if the wrong explosion-proof light is chosen, it may lead to an onsite explosion and result in casualties. Therefore, explosion-proof and waterproof are two entirely different concepts.

Waterproofing:

When purchasing, users need to determine if the LED explosion-proof light’s waterproof rating meets their requirements. Generally, LED explosion-proof lights have a waterproof rating of IP65-IP68.

In IP65-IP68, the first 6 indicates no dust entry, and the following number represents varying degrees of water resistance:

5 means spraying water on the housing from any direction won’t cause harm.

6 indicates that spraying water on the housing from any direction won’t cause any harmful effects.

7 denotes that after a specified duration, the amount of water entering the housing won’t reach a harmful level.

8 means that under conditions agreed upon by the manufacturer and user (stricter than characteristic number 7), the housing won’t reach a harmful level after continuous submersion.

Understand that explosion-proof and waterproof are two different concepts. Some substandard manufacturers sell waterproof LED lights as explosion-proof ones, but waterproof LEDs are ordinary fixtures and cannot compare with LED explosion-proof lights. If water enters an LED explosion-proof light, it can cause short-circuiting and fires. In hazardous areas, choosing the wrong explosion-proof light can lead to explosions and casualties. Therefore, explosion-proof and waterproof are two distinct concepts. Users must clearly communicate the desired explosion-proof type and protection level, and manufacturers must also ensure clarity. LED explosion-proof lights often have high protection treatments in the light source chamber, using silicone rubber strips, aluminum alloy material, and multiple bolts to compress and achieve an IP66 protection level.

In summary, LED explosion-proof lights can be waterproof, but the level of waterproofing varies. When purchasing and using, it’s also essential to ascertain whether the LED explosion-proof light’s waterproof rating meets the actual needs.
